Sixteen Candles

I'm watching Sixteen Candles on DVD and it's been a while since I've seen it unedited and w/o commercials.

John Hughes is a genius...aside from his writing and directing skills, he had an amazing ear for music.

Anyone think he'll ever come out of hiding/"retirement"?

Has anyone ever noticed how Long Duk Dong uses American eating utensils? Chad and I noticed it for the first time ever tonight. Awesome.

ETA: I love how Samantha is similar to me in that her family calls her "Sam," but she really wants to be called "Samantha." My parents and some family members call me "Val," but I prefer "Valerie."

Hughes goes to my uncle's church - should we tag along some day?

Weird timing... the guy who played Long Duk Dong was just on NPR the other day. Can you believe he's 52?

My wife likes those movies, too, Valerie.

Hughes really was a genius. I remember there was a sketch show on HBO around 1987 that had a Sketch how John Hughes writes, and it was him in a food court of a mall with tape recorders listening to teenagers. It was funny. Hughes went on to write much less hearty comedies like Home Alone and Dennis the Mennis, maybe he just lost his ear for emotion or maybe he realized it was just easy to have cute kids being pretentious. Either way, whenever I meet someone from Illinois I think that they have to be in some way like 16 candles, the breakfast club or the Griswolds.

Hughes was a genius. Then he started producing formula crap that made a lot of money. He won't come out retirement unless his financial adviser tells him his great-grandkids will have to flip burgers in 2040. Then we can count on Home Alone 5 or the "long-awaited" Breakfast Club sequel (already being re-imagined in an airport, I hear).

to FD - we all went to school at the high school from breakfast club, and threw massive parties where our houses got trashed. And someof us even made girls with our computer!

I was just watching Weird Science the other day, one of my favorite movies ever.
